Taking Care of Kitten - The two to four month old AKA The Terrible Two's part 2
Me: Ah there we go, a nice freshly cleaned litter box, I just hope it lasts for 5 minutes.
Silk: Thanks dad!
Me: Oh Well...
The Dreaded Litter Box!!!
Ok, so the litter box is not that big a deal really. It's just part of being a pet parent. So your cat will naturally be drawn to the litter box to do it's business. But they can't do that if they don't know where in your home it is located. If they don't know where it is, then they are going to go anywhere.
Solution?! Take kitty to the box and put her in it to play around in. OK so you may end up with some litter on the floor, but it's a small price to pay compared to what could happen. Once kitty knows where it is, you usually don't have to retrain kitty again. But in some instances some kittens may need a refresher. After two or three more times, they'll get it. If not, there could be another problem. If your kitten is still going outside the box, a trip to the vet may need to be in order.
It seems like a no brainer that petting your kitten/cat is something you do, but it should be done because as stated in my previous post Taking Care of Kitten - The two to four month old AKA The Terrible Two's cats are sociable animals and grooming, or petting in this case, is a big part of a cats life, plus you get to hear that soothing sound they make.
Depending on your breed most kittens/cats only need a good brushing a few times a week. Other breeds may need to be brushed once a day or more.
So you will need to take an active rule on making sure kitty is use to grooming habits, which includes brushing, getting use to water and hair dryers.
Everyone loves toys and cats are no different. Be careful not to introduce certain toys that move fast, these may scare your kitten and put her off playing with toys all together.
Different surfaces and outside
If you're able to, allow your kitten to walk on as many surfaces as possible. This allows kitty to get used to these different surfaces.
So your cat wants to go outside. Well a well chosen leash and collar/harness is a good way to introduce your cat to the great outdoors.
If you're like me, then maybe you don't want to use a collar to walk your kitty. I totally understand that, after all it is more dangerous for a cat to be on leash attached to a collar, given how easy it is for a cat to choke. For more information on this please see my previous post "Collar v Harness".
Boxes are like cat nip
So you have toys for your cat, but why is it that you spend millions of dollars on cat toys, some of which come in a big box. Only to have your cat jump in the box and sit there, for hours!
I think this is one of those questions that if you were to learn the answer to, it would massively disappoint you or drive you crazy.
Stay tuned for for parts 4 and 5 of this amazing story!
